Did you know that in the area5 million people in the USpull a wisdom tooth every year? This means that about 13,000 wisdom teeth are removed every day. How much more so if we include multiple extractions due to severe oral infections and trauma? This would only increase the clinical importance of tooth extraction procedures for maintaining oral health and upright teeth.

Check out the following for more information.

What is tooth extraction and why is it necessary?

Tooth extraction or exodontia is a clinical procedure in which a tooth is completely removed from its socket like no otherconservative treatment of teethcan save a tooth. In this procedure, the tooth is pulled out of the gums in response to problems and conditions such as:

  • A completely decayed tooth due to a serious cavity
  • A tooth that has been damaged beyond repair as a result of external trauma
  • An impacted tooth or a tooth that does not penetrate the gums
  • Severely overcrowded teeth undergoing orthodontic treatment

Simply neglecting a tooth that needs to be removed puts your oral health at risk. This can lead to halitosis (bad breath problems), gum disease and oral cancer. Even worse, it can also lead to a deadly blood infection (sepsis), which over time can seriously damage vital organs.

In medical practice, all tooth extractions are performed under local anesthesia to numb the area near the surgical site and relieve the pain and discomfort caused by the procedure.

Simple tooth extractions are performed by a dentist while a surgeon performs a tooth that requires surgery.

There are two main types of tooth extractions

There are two main types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical.

Simple extractions are the most common form of tooth removal. These are non-surgical extractions performed by a general dentist and are virtually uncomplicated. To loosen the tooth, it is necessary to lift the gum before removing it with tweezers.

However, surgical extraction is a different process. Incisions are made in the gums before the tooth is completely extracted. This is standard procedure when removing an impacted tooth, usually the third molar. That is why we have dental surgeons who are specialized in this type of treatment and who are skilled in performing this procedure.

Depending on the condition of the tooth, our dentist will first take an x-ray of the tooth to analyze its structure and protect the adjacent teeth. This is followed by preparations on how to properly extract the tooth and what type of extraction is needed.

Extraction of wisdom teeth

At some point in your life, you may have to deal with erupting a wisdom tooth. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent adult teeth to emerge or erupt in the mouth. They usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25, although not everyone can experience this event.

When a wisdom tooth erupts, it may grow at an angle to the next tooth or second molar. Sometimes it can appear at an angle to the back of the mouth. It can also erupt straight up or down, just like other teeth stuck in the jawbone.

Third molars can cause pain, infection, gum disease and tooth decay caused by trapped food particles.

We often recommend wisdom tooth extraction if a patient has symptoms such as swollen jaw and gums, bad breath and jaw pain.

A wisdom tooth may require simple or surgical extraction. For example, a simple tooth extraction may be recommended if a wisdom tooth is visible. However, if it is partially or completely retained (invisible or completely erupted), our dentist may recommend surgery or even a bone graft.

Bone grafting is the process of increasing the volume and density of the jaw, especially in areas where bone loss occurs. A bone graft can be taken from the patient's body or purchased from a human or animal tissue bank. In some cases, the bone graft may also be synthetic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can't find the information you're looking for? To help you, we have listed some of the most frequently asked questions!

Oral surgeons normally recommend refraining from strenuous physical activity for 48 to 72 hours after tooth extraction to give the wound more time to heal. However, it is expected that the gum tissue will regenerate and heal after 15-30 days. But it may still depend on the type of extraction you've had. Surgical extractions take longer to heal than nonsurgical procedures.

With non-surgical extraction, the dentist usually does not give you a long list of do's and don'ts before the procedure. However, those who will undergo surgical extraction are not expected to:

• Eat and drink 8 hours before surgery

• Stay up late the night before surgery

• Rook

There is no limit to the number of teeth that can be removed at one time. While rare, it is possible, especially if it's the only option to treat severely infected teeth. It is certainly common to remove 2-4 teeth at a time.

An impacted wisdom tooth is by far the most difficult tooth to remove. As mentioned, the higher the degree of impingement, the more difficult the extraction.

As part of post-treatment care, you should refrain from:

• Consumption of alcohol/alcohol as this delays healing

• Hot drinks that can cause swelling

• Using a straw, as this allows the healing clot to flow out

• Smoking

To make tooth extraction heal faster, we recommend to our patients:

• Follow a soft and healthy diet

• Brush your teeth gently and avoid the unaffected extraction area so as not to dislodge the blood clot

• Keep the extraction site clean at all times

Painkillers are used after tooth extraction. It is advisable to have the medicines prescribed by your doctor. However, in practice, Ibuprofen is most commonly used in a dose of 400-600 mg and is taken every 6-8 hours.
